Morris Garages (MG), a British automaker, has announced its plans to launch their first product in India. It is now owned by the Chinese state-owned automotive company SAIC, formerly (Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation). According to Rajeev Chaba, President and MD, MG Motor India, the first product will be a C-segment SUV in the second quarter of 2019, followed by an all-electric SUV in 2020.
Upcoming MG SUV
The new SUV offers dimensions that are larger than the current generation Hyundai Tucson and the Honda CR-V. Going by the details shared by the company about their first product for the Indian automobile market, this SUV will be available with both petrol and diesel engine options.
It is interesting to note that the second product is confirmed to be an all-electric SUV. Michael Yang, Executive Director of International Business, SAIC, has officially stated that MG Motor will launch a pure-electric SUV in India, that will be globally competitive.
They also added that the upcoming electric SUV will be a breakthrough chapter in the electric vehicle space in India. India, being a key global market for MG Motor, the company has plans to establish itself in the market first, before looking at volume sales.
The Chinese-backed brand is well-aware of the challenges that many global car brands in India have to confront. Many auto MNCs also find the Indian market to be a difficult market to crack.
MG SUV Engine Specifications
MG Motor India will introduce a 1.5-litre direct injection petrol engine. As suggested by previous reports, the motor is already being road-tested in India. It generates around 168bhp and 250Nm of torque and is mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission with a manual shifting option. The SUV will be equipped with a 2.0-litre Fiat-derived diesel engine mated to an automatic gearbox.
MG SUV Interiors
The MG SUV of India will measure around 4655mm in length, 1835mm in width and 1760mm in height, which makes it slightly bigger than the Jeep Compass and the Hyundai Tucson. Initially, the model will be introduced in a five-seater avatar; however, the market is also rife with speculations that at a later stage, the company’s line-up in India will also introduce even and eight-seat options.
The SUV also promises unique and premium interior styling which will surely impress Indian car-buyers. You can expect a three-layered dashboard, replete with a soft-touch material and contrast stitching.
Other features on offer include a free-standing infotainment screen, a decent-size TFT multi-info display and other features such as a panoramic sunroof and leather seats. The SUV will also be accompanied by an electronic parking brake, power seats and cruise control.
MG SUV Exterior
As far as the exterior is concerned, this SUV will stun onlookers with its LED headlights, tail-lights, and dynamic LED turn indicators which are similar to the ones spotted on the latest Audi models as well as on the Renault Captor. Coming to the pricing, MG Motor India intends to have competitive pricing for this SUV.
In all likelihood, it will be positioned between the Creta and the Tucson in terms of pricing, which means the starting range of the model will be somewhere around Rs. 10 lakh for the petrol variants, while for the diesel variants it can go up to approximately Rs. 16 lakh (ex-showroom).
